SOCAR’s sharing service is perfect for car commitment phobes

For those who want to drive but can’t deal with the thought of loans and maintenance fees

Having a car to drive usually means you’re reasonably well-to-do (or in massive debt). Now vehicle-sharing service Socar aims to change that in Malaysia.

The South Korea-based service, which just launched here, allows you to book a car of your choice via a smartphone app, much like with ride-sharing or bicycle-sharing apps. You can get one for something as simple as running a short errand or longer periods, for example if you’re heading on a week-long road trip (within Malaysian borders of course).

Socar boasts a fleet of 240 fully insured cars at 100 locations within Kuala Lumpur, with plans to grow that in the future. The cars that are available range from the Perodua Axia, Honda City and Honda HRV to the Mini Cooper. Pricing starts at RM8 per hour for the Perodua Axia and goes up to RM25 an hour for the Mini Cooper.

Keyless driving is the name of the game here, which means you’ll be able to unlock, lock, sound the horn and turn on the emergency lights with the Socar app once you’ve booked a car.

Even better: Socar vehicles have their own reserved parking spaces across Kuala Lumpur so you won’t be driving around in circles looking for parking and wasting your lunch hour.

Petrol for the first 30km is also included in your booking fee, but you’ll have to fill the tank up to 50% before returning the car to prevent incurring extra charges. Not to mention it’s just a nice thing to do for the next person who books that car.

The service has a dedicated 24-hour Customer Support hotline for emergencies such as breakdowns, and every Socar reservation comes protected with personal accident insurance.

If you’re unable to get to a Socar vehicle, there’s a Door-to-Door service where your reserved Socar gets delivered to your desired pick-up and return location for a fee of RM5. This service is currently only available at Bangsar and Damansara Heights though.

In conjunction with its launch, Socar is offering new members 50% off their first two bookings. The offer is valid until 31 January 2018.
