We’ve been lucky enough to explore this little highland gem a few times now, and it always feels like a breath of fresh air. Literally.
Tucked in the hills of Sabah, just a two-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang is often called the “New Zealand of Malaysia”. And once you see those rolling green fields and grazing cows, you’ll understand why.
But there’s more to Kundasang than just pretty views. From hot springs and strawberry farms to hobbit houses and mountain trails, this town is packed with fun things to do, especially if you love nature, food, and a bit of adventure.

1. Desa Dairy Cattle Farm
This is hands down one of the most popular Kundasang tourist spots, and for good reason.
It really does feel like you’ve been transported to New Zealand: complete with black and white cows, chilly winds, and views of Mount Kinabalu towering in the background.
What we loved most was watching the cows graze in the misty green fields while sipping on fresh milk.
You can try their super creamy ice cream (the chocolate one’s our faves) and even feed baby calves. If you’re travelling with kids, they’ll absolutely love it here. It’s also a photographer’s dream. The scenery is just that good.
2. Kundasang War Memorial
This place really touched us. The Kundasang War Memorial is one of the more meaningful Kundasang tourist attractions, built to honour the soldiers who lost their lives during the infamous Sandakan Death Marches in WWII.
The memorial is made up of four gardens – English, Australian, Bornean, and the Contemplation Garden – all beautifully kept and peaceful.
This historical site makes you pause, reflect, and appreciate peace. Definitely worth visiting, even if you’re not usually into history.
3. Poring Hot Spring
After all the exploring and chilly weather, a warm soak in Poring Hot Spring is such a treat. The water here is rich in sulphur and believed to have healing properties and is perfect for tired muscles.
There are public pools and private tubs you can rent if you want more privacy.
We also recommend doing the canopy walk while you’re here. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views from above the rainforest are amazing. There’s even a butterfly garden nearby if you have time.
4. Pekan Nabalu Market
This colourful roadside market is one of those spots you might miss if you’re in a rush, but we always make it a point to stop here. It’s about halfway between KK and Kundasang, and a great place to stretch your legs.
You’ll find everything from juicy pineapples and sweet corn to handmade crafts, wooden souvenirs, and even traditional snacks. We always grab a few bottles of local honey and some pickled bambangan.
Plus, the view of Mount Kinabalu from here? Unbeatable on a clear day.
5. Alpaca Club
Yes, there are alpacas in Sabah! The Alpaca Club in Mesilou is such a fun place, especially for families and animal lovers.
The alpacas are gentle and fluffy, and you can feed and take photos with them.
There’s also a mini petting zoo with other animals and a cosy little café with alpaca-themed merch and snacks.
It’s one of the newer Kundasang tourist attractions, and we really think it deserves more love.
6. Spring Garden
We stumbled upon Spring Garden during a more laid-back visit, and we fell in love with how quiet and scenic it was.
It’s a floral garden surrounded by rolling hills and misty views. It’s perfect for slow walks, reflection, or just relaxing with a cup of tea.
There are benches scattered around and little garden paths to explore. We recommend going in the morning when the air is crisp and the light is soft.
It’s one of those peaceful spots that’s good for the soul.
7. Kipungit Waterfall
Kipungit is a lovely little waterfall tucked within the rainforest near Poring. It’s a short and easy hike from the entrance, and the trail itself is beautiful. It’s surrounded by thick jungle and the sound of birds.
The waterfall isn’t huge, but it’s great for a quick dip or to cool your feet. There are some picnic areas nearby too, so bring snacks or lunch and enjoy a relaxing nature escape.
8. Humble Hobbit Home
If you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings (or just love cute places), you’ll want to check this out.
The Humble Hobbit Home is a small, whimsical spot with hobbit-style houses built into the hillside.
It’s super Instagrammable and really fun to explore. We felt like we stepped into a fantasy world for a while.
There’s even a swing with a view over the mountains. Definitely one of the more unique Kundasang tourist attractions.
9. Kinabalu National Park
This is the crown jewel of Sabah attractions. Kinabalu Park is a particularly special national park because it’s Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse places in the world.
Even if you’re not climbing Mount Kinabalu, there’s so much to do: walking trails, nature tours, birdwatching, and botanic gardens. The air is cool and fresh, and there’s something so calming about just being surrounded by forest.
A must-visit for nature lovers.
10. Mesilou Highland Strawberry Farm
Strawberries in Sabah? Yes, and they’re pretty good too!
Mesilou Strawberry Farm lets you pick your own strawberries, which is always fun, especially with kids or your partner.
The farm also sells homemade jams, syrups, and strawberry desserts. We still remember the strawberry ice cream we had here. Cold, creamy, and slightly tangy. So good!
11. Sosodikon Hill
One of our favourite sunrise hikes ever. Sosodikon Hill is a short and sweet climb (about 15 minutes), but the views at the top are WOW. You get an incredible 360-degree view of the valleys and Mount Kinabalu bathed in golden light.
It’s not too crowded if you go early, and the trail is beginner-friendly. Bring a jacket since it gets quite chilly in the morning! Definitely one of Kundasang’s best places to visit if you love beautiful landscapes.
12. Kundasang Market
Right in the heart of town, this market is always bustling with fresh produce, flowers, and friendly vendors.
We love coming here early in the morning when everything is still misty and the vegetables are fresh off the farm.
You’ll find purple cabbage, sweet corn, mountain strawberries, and even fresh orchids. It’s a great place to pick up some local snacks too.

13. Sinalau Bakas
Now this is something you have to try when you’re in Sabah. Sinalau Bakas is smoked wild boar meat, usually sold at roadside stalls between Tamparuli and Kundasang.
The meat is seasoned and smoked over open fire, giving it a deliciously charred, juicy flavour. It’s one of those Sabah tourist attractions you can eat! We recommend pairing it with rice and sambal. Pure bliss!
14. Maragang Hill
If you want a taste of hiking without committing to Mount Kinabalu, Maragang Hill is perfect. The hike takes about 2-3 hours round trip and offers beautiful views of the mountain, forest, and cloud cover.
We found the trail to be peaceful and not too busy. It’s great for sunrise or sunset. Wear good shoes and bring water. It’s moderately challenging but worth every step.
15. Tamparuli Suspension Bridge
This might not be in Kundasang exactly, but since you’ll pass through Tamparuli on the way, you should definitely make a stop here.
The suspension bridge is a little wobbly but fun to cross. Locals use it daily, and it’s a great way to see a slice of village life. There’s even a folksong about it: “Jambatan Tamparuli”!
The locals even put up a little dance show for us! It’s charming, authentic, and makes for a fun memory.
